Malaysia’s Eternal Tribute to its Heroes: The National Monument

Located on Jalan Parlimen in close proximity to the Parliament House, National Monument known as Tugu Negara in Malay is a tribute to the selfless Malaysian heroes who laid down their lives to ensure the peace and liberty of the nation.

The bronze sculpture was constructed in 2966 by the renowned American craftsman Felix de Weldon. Comprising 7 figures of military men, the 15.54m tall statue is one of the largest self-supporting bronze sculptures in the world making it one of Kuala Lumpur’s magnetic tourist attractions.  The seven images represent seven essential characteristics of true heroes; unity, leadership, vigilance, strength, courage, suffering and sacrifice. The central figure holding a national flag is set between two armed militants. Towards the right of the flag bearer a kneeling soldier attending a wounded colleague manifesting the humanity that necessarily accompanies the strength of a champion. Two figures of fallen combatants compose the remainder of the monument.

The memorial site is composed of a semicircular pavilion and beautiful surrounding gardens as well as the National monument which stands in the middle of an extensive rectangular pool.
