Reloading OAL Question?

I am new to reloading. I am trying to figure out the best Over All Length my bullets and I am a little confused.

For a .308 WInchester, 2.800" is the SAAMI Maximum OAL specification, some bullets may have a shorter specification.

As a new reloader, you should stick to the maximum OAL listed in a loading manual since using the same load with a shorter OAL or longer OAL can change pressure levels.

When you get more experience, you can measure the specific OAL where a particular bullet design engages the lands. You can buy a device like the Hornady Chamber gauge with a dummy cartridge that lets you perform that measurement easily with a set of calipers. I would also suggest using Hornady's OAL gauge set since it measures off a more consistent point on the bullet than the tip. Do remember, that the 2.800" is to the bullet tip.

However, if you are loading from an internal magazine, you may be restricted to the 2.800" dimension
