Are animals killed for their leather or are they already dead?

I am thinking about buying a hat that is made out of sheepskin. Was the sheep already dead, or did they kill it to take its skin? For example, the sheep could have been used for wool, but then it could have died and they used its skin for stuff. So, is leather and other animal skins taken from animals who are killed simply for their skin and/or fur?

Normally as much of the animal is used as possible. For example, when a cow is slaughtered, the muscles are used for meat, the bones and blood for fertilizer, the skin gets used for leather, and whatever is left ends up in dogfood and hotdogs. Same goes for sheepskin and pig hides.

The only animals that are killed only for the hide might be mink, muskrats, beavers, and seals; the so-called fur-bearing animals.
