United States Passport - Requirements for First Time Applicants 

Many people are finding that travel restrictions today are such that owning a United States passport is a necessity. Even traveling to and from Mexico and Canada requires a passport and it's fast becoming the most requested document of identification. This article is a general description of the steps for applying for a U.S. passport and how to make the application process go smoothly.

The first place to start is to gather your citizenship documentation. Birth certificates must be certified and embosses. If you're unable to locate yours, start by contacting the Department of Health, Office of Vital Records in the city and state where you were born. It's a good idea to request and pay for 2 copies as you'll be required to submit one of the originals with your passport application. It will be returned to you but having a back up copy is always a good idea. If you're a naturalized citizen, you'll need to submit your certified naturalization certificate.

You're required to submit an application for a passport in person, if you've never had one before. This must be done at an authorized passport acceptance facility. You'll be happy to know that your local U.S. Post Office is one such place, which makes it a convenient choice. City libraries and local government offices also qualify.  

You'll have to fill out and turn in a form DS-11 "Application for a U.S. Passport" along with your citizenship documents. This form is available at any of the passport acceptance offices and can also be downloaded from the web site of the United States Department of State. If you print it at home, be sure it's clear and readable and use black ink only to fill it out. Print carefully and don't sign your signature since that has to be witnessed at the passport office.

Don't forget that you'll need 2 passport photographs taken before applying. These must meet strict guidelines so ask if the processing center you've selected also takes care of these. Don't expect to just bring down 2 of your favorite pictures as they won't be accepted.

Bring your checkbook also as it costs around $100.00 for all the application and processing fees for a passport. Mailing is an added cost, as is the price for photographs. Any request for an "expedited" passport adds on even more. Check the United States Department of State website for the most up to date cost for passport application.

Your passport is good for a full 10 years and renewing is much easier and cheaper, so it will be worth the time and money to get it done now. You'll breeze through travel security checkpoints and be glad you did!

Can we print the passport application on regular white printer paper?

I will be traveling out of the US in a month and a half or so and need to get my passport. I went to www.travel.state.gov to find out how to go about it, since this is my first time. I read that I can print out the application and then bring it in with me. My question is: "Can we just print the application on regular white printer paper?" According to the webpage it says that the application has to be printed on matte surface paper.

Yes, regular all-purpose white 8 1/2" x 11" printer paper is just fine. It says "matte," so you don't use glossy papers like your standard photo stock.

The whole point of filling it out online is so that your answers will be encoded into a 2-D barcode that will print on the left side of the page. Their computers can scan your app, making the process go faster somehow. So use a nice laser printer to make a good clean original printout of your application, and you'll be good to go!
