Canadian E-Passports Enhance Border Security
The first time I heard about e-passports last year I thought “What the hell, is this another Big Bother scenarioâ€. I remember the Passport authorities had planned to embed fingerprints and iris scans in electronic passports. It was a relief for me to find out that this plan was rejected and there will be no additional biometric information on that radio-readable chip...
So E-passports that we will start getting in 2011 will have a digitized picture of the passport holder as well as their name, place of birth, date of birth, and passport number. This is exactly the same information as included in current passports. The passport office Canada is confident that the new passports will protect against tempering and identity fraud. They say the passports are protected against unauthorized access, because they can be read only from 10 cm away. The chip will enhance the current passport security features by containing a holographic image and a hidden photo of the owner that can be only under ultraviolet light. In order for the passport to be valid, all three images must coincide. Additionally, the chip will contain a country-specific signature that proves the passport was issued by the Canadian government. When this information has been included in the chip, it is then locked and the information cannot be altered.
This sounds very well to me, and as I plan to visit my sister in the US I would be very confident using the new e-passport. However, my husband is not happy with it at all. His arguments are that the government will be able to track people and know exactly in which they have been in the past. He argues the government will build a huge database that they will be able to sell to whoever pays the highest price. This might be true, but this is not something new. Every time you register in a website with your email address, you start receiving spam. Welcome to the 21 century.
I called my sister in the States yesterday and told her about the e-passports. She told me not to worry as they have been having them in the US for several years now.
