Travel options in Sri Lanka?

I will be in Sri Lanka for 5 days to attend a conference. The organizers have booked my stay at Negambo. Considering that i will be holed up in the conference all day and will probably only have the evenings off but still want to see what i can of the country when i am there, can someone recommend places to visit? Something that will be doable in the limited time available?

How sad it is indeed that you really do not have time to see our beautiful country.
O.k. lets see... Since Negambo is away from the capital colombo, with you only having the evening off you can come to colombo and may be do a city tour. but I doubt it whether you'll be able to see much before it gets dark.
If you do get some time, a full free day may be, try to visit the beautiful city of Kandy, with its cool climate and sceneries. you can visit the "Dalada Maligawa", one of the most holiest temples for the Buddhists, the Botanical Gardens, and also on the way to Kandy you can visit the "Pinnawala Elephant orphanage".
There is so much to see here but you do need more time..
