If you are looking for the be all/end all for Australian topographic mapping here is a link to the site where they take topographic mapping VERY seriously:

It all depends on what level of detail you want to see on your map, how big you want the whole map to be, and what level of detail you want for natural and man made features besides just changes in elevation.

A good map for you may not be a good map for me if I need to see street names level detail and you need to see where flash flood riverbeds are.

The deal apparently happened on Feb 12, but I just saw it via a tweet from @jeffharrison. I tracked down an official statement from ESRI Australia's largest shareholder Boustead Singapore Limited, which states the price of AU$2.5 million.
