Am I allowed to carry on a tote bag, backpack AND a purse?

I've been looking through the carry-on rules for Delta and Northwest Airlines and it says that only one carry-on luggage and one personal item is allowed. Does that mean I should only carry my purse and tote bag (or backpack)? I guess this confuses me cuz I'm use to traveling with my mom and sister and it feels like we carry more than this.
