By the way, I didn't mean that I was going to carry on the keyboard. Those were two seperate questions.

They are FAA approved and will definitely protect your keyboard, if it fits.
If you can't afford one, I would probably take it to Pak Mail or a place that ships goods and have them pack it for you. Tell them that you will be flying with it.
Check with the airline that you will be flying with for baggage allowances and what they consider oversized luggage as you may incur an extra fee if it's bigger than your allowance.
