What is a carry on bag, and checked luggage?

I've never flown in a plane before and I don't understand all these terms. Can you explain to me what they mean? I know that every airline has its own rules, but what are some common rules regarding luggage?

Carry on bag is a piece of luggage that you take on the plane with you. Checked luggage is something you give to the representative when you Check-In for your flight when you first walk into the airport and they store it in a special compartment in the plane. Usually, you are allowed to take one carry on bag with you on the plane. If you have a laptop, you can take that with you on board as well in a separate bag, which technically makes it a 2-piece carry on luggage. Airlines allow that.

Rules have changed for various airlines for Checked Luggage. Some airlines allow you to check-in two pieces of luggage that do not exceed a weight of 50lbs per each. If it goes beyond that weight, you might have to pay extra money. However, recently many domestic airlines allow you to check-in only one bag for free, and any additional ones you have to pay. I even saw an airline that charges $25 for checking in your first piece of luggage. The best way to find that out is to go on airline's website and read luggage rules and regulations.
