How do you remove a mildew smell from leather shoes?

I have a pair of brown leather oxford doc martins,
NOT the inside, but outside leather on my oxford doc martins have a strong oder like mildew... Does anyone know how to remove this smell? I tried drying them out, putting them in the sun, not wearing them for 4 months... nothing seems to work =o
the smell is from the leather getting wet to many times... and it is only on the outside of the shoe... thats it... it has nothing to do with them being dirty...

Throw them away, they are ruined.
