When I worked for Halliburton we had a device that would track a needle across a steel bearing and could measure the wear pattern. It was so sensitive, that it would pick up the groves created in the machining process. The device was set on a granite pad set on an isolation base. Imperative to the process was the computer that would analyze and plot the surface profile. I do not remember the manufacturer, or the name of the instrument.
