Am i going to get charged for excess baggage if i pack my climbing rack in my luggage?

I am flying home after living in Canada for a year and along with the accumulation of all my clothes/books etc i want to take my climbing rack back with me. i have seen lots of websites advising about how to pack so that your gear doesn't get damaged or the airlines dont think your trying to pack away bombs when they see the outline of a cam on there machines but no-one seems to be worried about the weight. My rack weighs a tonne, has any-one had any experience with this and has any futher advise.
oh i also have a snowboard to take back with me, one of my freinds suggested stashing my rack in that bag since I can check my snowboard in for free?

Only if your bag weighs over 50lbs - why not pack parts of your rack in two seperate bags and make sure each is under the weight limit. You won't have any problems with security, I pack this stuff as well as custom electronics all the time and have never had any problems in customs. Just make sure you tell them you bought everything in the US and are returning with the same equipment.

Shipping insured seems like a good idea, but if you actually loose something that is shipped insured they will ask you for the receipt of the goods lost before reimbursing - most people don't keep all those receipts.
