What so called europe phone is when a gsm phone doesnt have 850/1900mhz freq bcz most us carrier works on that freq.And us phone is when it have that freq.GSM system (protocol as you mention) is same all over the world,the sense of different only on that frequency.
However if your E71 cellphone featured 850/900/1800/1900 freqs,you will be fine all over the planet.
