The Amazing, Foldable Flat

The English company Afterheels has launched a new line of ultra-compact ballet pumps designed to fit in your clutch purse. That’s right, these foldable flats are smaller than a pack of cigarettes. The petite package even comes with a duffel bag for your discarded heels. Even the process of purchasing a pair of Afterheels is convenient (at least, if you live in England where Afterheels are manufactured). Twenty-one different English clubs have installed vending machines that sell Afterheels. The flats have been extraordinarily popular. In just three weeks, the company sold 6,000 pairs.

For 4.99 pounds (not dollars!) you get a pair of waterproof flats with cotton lining. The shoes are made entirely in England from natural and recyclable materials. They come in a variety of colors (from metallic gray to hot pink), and you can “custom design” your Afterheels if you purchase them online.

But Afterheels is not the only company championing this idea of the foldable flat. Rollasoles are shoes that – as the name suggests – roll up into an equally manageable size that can be slipped into your clutch. They come in three sizes (small, medium and large) and four different colors (black, silver, gold and pink). The flats range in price from 5 pounds to 6.95 (gold Rollasoles are inexplicably cheaper) and can also be purchased online as well as at various nightclubs in England.

For the present, foldable or roll-able flats seem to be a UK phenomenon. There’s no plans to install Afterheels and Rollasoles vending machines in the nightclubs of New York. Americans whose high heels are killing their feet might decide that the international shipping fees are worth the convenience of having a comfy pair of ballerina slippers on standby next to their lipstick and wallet. In any case, it’s a good bet that it won’t be long before “the foldable flat” becomes equally popular across the pond.
