Coins Key

People have been collecting coins for ages. It has only been recently that collectors have been paying very close attention to the grades of the grades that they collect. A grade can definitely make a coin go up in value. There are also many other factors that can indirectly influence a coin's market value. But I found that there are two main reasons that directly effect a coin's value. These two factors cause them to go up and down in value.

Many things can influence a coin's market value. Some of these factors could be, but are not limited to: grade, color, mintage, population, current precious metal values, popularity, and availability. Each of these factors influence a coin's value in a different way. But all of these factors only influence a coin's value indirectly (more or less). Each also have different influences on a coin. But, no one factor can make or break a coin's "collectability."

A low enough mintage could make a coin scarce. But it may not be worth much without strong demand. A high grade may boost a coin's value, but if its' population was sky high, its' value may plateau at some point. Precious metal values may influence a coin's value, but not all coins are.9999% pure. Furthermore, some coins are worth a lot more then their precious metal content. So their precious metal values maybe irrelevant to their book values. Colors make all the difference in the coin market. But a coin cannot be worth more then its' true market value. So, a white coin is easier to market then a blackened coin. So color only controls a coins salability. Clearly none of these factors completely control a coin's market value.

The two factors that directly influence a coin's market value is supply and demand. Separated, they are almost worthless. But together, they control the whole numismatic market. When a coin is in demand, its' value should go up. But if its' supply is unlimited, it probably won't go up in value by much. The opposite of this is also true. If a coin has a very low supply, it may not be worth much if nobody wants to collect it.

In the right conditions, a coin can continually go up in value. If a coin has a low supply and a high demand, it may never see a downturn. This is the reason why a lot of key dates do not go down in value. But, some key dates don't really go up in value because there is no demand for the coin. One good example is the 1970 D Kennedy Half. It only has mintage of 2.15 million, but its' demand is extremely low. But because supply and demand have to go together, this rare half dollar may never skyrocket in value. A BU specimen could be had for a mere $20 bucks.

When picking rarities, it is always best to pick low mintage coins with high demand. The low mintage is easy to figure out. But, the demand part is not particularly quantitative science. So I think the easiest way to figure out the demand is to select popular series. Or you can select the more popular key dates. The best investments are low mintage coins that has strong demand. It's these two factors that drive a coin's value up and down. So don't hesitate to go straight for the popular key dates when you are looking for an investment that has strong reason to go up in value.

No Longer the Hobby of Kings Coin Collecting is for Everyone

Collecting coins has been called the hobby of kings because in the early days of coin collecting kings were the only ones wealthy enough to be able to save coins as most people spent any coins they received to stay alive.

Luckily for us collecting coins, or numismatics as it formally called, is a fascinating hobby that is open to anyone today. You can literally begin as a casual collector right now with the change in your pocket or purse and grow from there as you gain more knowledge and experience.

What makes coin collecting so unique is the fact that there are so many areas to consider specializing in. Some of the possible areas of collecting include collecting coins of your country, foreign coins, paper money, antique coins and coins with minting errors.

You can even focus on specific historical periods such as coins of the 1900s or coins of the Roman Empire. The possibilities are endless and it can be somewhat difficult to decide just where to begin.

Many beginning coin collectors start collecting coins from their country as they are most well-known to them. I would advise going to your local library and taking out a couple of books on coin collecting to give you some ideas on the various types of coins available and they are graded and valued. This will also help you to make a decision on any particular types of coins you want to start collecting and give you a solid background on the history of the coins.

I can assure you that will find coins that were produced in the past that you never knew existed. For example, did you know that at one time the United States minted a twenty cent piece or a two cent piece?

A local coin club can help you grow your skills and is a great way to meet other collectors in your area. They are also a good source for local coin show information and can give you the low down on local coin dealers. The Internet is also home to some great collecting resources.

A key point to remember when first starting out in coin collecting is to control your excitement if you can. That way you will not go out and start buying coins without first gaining the proper knowledge and this can save you a lot of money in the long run.

I can tell you there were some coins I wouldn't have bought had I been a little savvier in subjects like coin grading when I was just beginning.

The good news is coin collecting has grown so popular that there are very strict grading standards in use today to protect collectors and with the abundance of coin collecting information available it is simple to determine a coin's value.

Many hobbies can be costly to participate in but you can start collecting coins for next to nothing and as your collecting skills develop you will have the confidence to buy or trade coins of higher value. By starting slowly you can avoid making bad purchases that could diminish your enthusiasm for one of the most satisfying and rewarding hobbies there is.

Did you ever do "Chicken scratches" on your arms or legs with a key or coin?

I did in the 70's/80's and have no flipping idea why, do you?
It was only something I did within a two year period and have never done since.

And definitely do not advocate anyone else does as it's stupid!

We used to do chineses burns at school. Rubbing/scratching a certain area until you couldn't stand the pain. Seems pretty stupid now, but still bare the scars!
