Angel'S Share - From The Alcohol World
Each year of aging the distilled liquid losses- 2% from the alcohol volume and to this process associate the phrase "Angel's share".
Many distilled spirits are virtually undrinkable after their sugar content has fermented into alcohol. In the case of distilled spirits, the alcoholic content of a "fresh" batch may be nearly 95% ABV (190 proof) or better, and the flavor of the beverage would not be very appealing. To reduce the percentage of Alcohol and to intensify the subtle flavors of the distilled spirit, producers often store their products in oak barrels. In the case of distilled spirits such as whiskey, the staves of the oak barrels are often heavily charred before assembly.
Over time, some of the Alcohol seeps through the grain of the oak staves and evaporates into the open air. The evaporating Alcohol is called the Angel's Share, alluding to the belief that guardian angels watch over the product as it ages. Barrels of distilled spirits may remain stacked in large warehouses for years, each one rendering its own Angel's Share over time. Needless to say, these warehouses filled with oak barrels and aging spirits can be quite fragrant.
Although much depends on the materials and methods used for barrel-making, many distilled spirit producers estimate that the Angel's Share of Alcohol lost annually is around 2% per barrel. This means that a distilled whiskey stored in an oak barrel for 7 years could be expected to lose 14% of its total Alcohol content. Because of the Angel's Share, a formerly undrinkable pure grain Alcohol can mellow to a more palatable 43% ABV (86 proof) over time.

Anybody have any information on Louis XIII packaging?
I've recently gotten into Louis XIII cognac, and I've noticed that the packaging has changed some through the years...I was wondering if somebody could educate me a little about the history of Louis XIII packaging, I'm familiar with the newest "clamshell" shaped case that comes inside the cardboard box with the string handles, but I've also seen some boxes that look like treasure chests, and an octagon shaped box which I suspect was really old because the bottle inside had the old fashioned bulb stopper instead of the newer fleur de lys one...I've also heard of a green box that I guess was used in the really old days...is there perhaps a website that chronicles all the changes over the years???
If you go on Remy Martin's website there are links to the Louis and i am sure it shows some of the changes.
There have been been many but the most important is if you find one that is from the 50's or 60's do not drink it . remy was still using the lead crystal at the time and of course over the years the lead will have seaped into the cognac. Remy has fixed this in the past 25 years where they have included a plasticinsert between the glass and the cognac which protects it
