Whether a creating a complete new look or just adding style to your kitchen - buying things effectively should be is a bit like shopping for clothes.

Accessorizing your kitchen, can involve looking for practical tools for cooking or dining, but should also be searching for things to make your kitchen desirable,

This could involve, as we have at home, a wall with lots of shelving containing some pots and kitchen utensils but lots of bits of bric a brac, my wife and I have picked up on our travels -from Japanese dolls to 50s soda siphons, this is an area people always orientate to and seem to enjoy.

Trying to be individual is also important and not get an entire look/theme from one store, or source.

Too much of one style or theme can look great in a stylish decor magazine photoshoot but can look contrived in reality. It’s always best to follow your own true instincts rather than give a nod to trends and fads. Someone I know buys everything from one expensive store and her house looks like a retail showroom - you can’t buy style!

The key words are individual and attitude -sticking to a single minded approach to personalizing the space and making it interesting to guests - without making the space look too overbearing and making them uncomfortable!

Personalizing your space is the only way to really feel at home in your home! Giving a  kitchen your own authenticity is the top of your checklist

There is only one YOU and your home should reflect who you are.

Ten tips for starters...

- Think of the layout of the kitchen always put function first and follow with the style.

- When looking to buy to add or build your look, it is helpful to build up a scrapbook of themes and bits you like - act like and think like a designer.

- Make a feature area - this could be images in frames, things on shelves, a blackboard for you, kids and guests to scribble on or a combination of all of the above...

- Use the senses - freshen up your kitchen smells with sprigs of conifer or pine in jars or jugs- look great and lasts for ages..

When you get people round for dinner get them to choose their own audio backdrop with an interactive play list.

- Storage is key - good use of cupboards and shelves should always be at the top of mind in your kitchen. Whether concealing or displaying.

Details are important - decanter your washing up liquid into an interesting container instead of leaving it in that ugly plastic bottle.

- Buy some antique cookbooks as well as getting some original angles for cooking - they can look good on your kitchen shelves.

- Get originals for your wall- go to an art fair or college show - as well as being unique original art may also be worth a fortune one day!

- Avoid that cluttered look - especially if your kitchen is small- a few considered touches will always work best.

- Colour should be well considered - if in doubt keep it neutral.

- Constantly update! Moving thing around and tweaking the look keeps things fresh and maintains your interest.
