I just returned from Cancun and have been all over Mexico. Almost all places in Cancun take US currency at the going exchange rate. I use my ATM card, which is accepted at any bank or ATM machine. Some of the ATM's in Cancun will give you dollars or pesos. It doesn't matter which currency you decide to use. You will find that the exchange rate on traveler's checks is not that good, where an ATM is going to give you the current rate. Have fun.
