What all has to be in the in the plastic bag for carry-on luggage?

I am flying for the first time on monday. We are backpacking through Ireland and I only want to take a carry-on bag. But the problem of fitting all my shampoo and toiletries in a quart size bag has been a bit of a hassle.
I was wondering if anyone knows what specific things need to go in it? I know the liquid stuff does, but what about deoderant (solid, not gel) and bar soap? chapstick? make-up (eye shadow, mascara)

Anything that is solid does not need to go in the bag, you could come unstuck with make-up items, as some of these maybe seen as liquids, mascara is a good example. A good idea is to share item across those travelling, if there are men in the party, get them to take some extra toiletries, so the women can fit all of the make-up and feminine toiletries, ie. perfume, make-up etc...

Also, leave stuff like shower gel at home, and buy it their, is cheap and you could afford to discard it before travelling home.
