If a DC input is rated at 9V 50mA, could I use an adapter rated at DC 9V 300mA?

Your device requires 9Vdc input voltage.
It will typically draw 50mA of current.

Thus, any device you use to power your device, must also be rated at 9Vdc Output voltage.

However, it's current output capacity is irrelevant, as long as it can provide a "minimum" of 50 mA of output current continuously, as your device requires. Thus, your 300 mA power supply, or adaptor, should work fine. It just has much more power and current capacity than your device requires. But, that is ok. The device you are using it to power will only draw the amount of current it needs.
